Player nick: Milo
Name: Chance Velian
Codename: Hephaestus
Status: Other (City Dweller)
DoB/Age: June 23 / 17yrs
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 175lbs
Powers:
* Pyrokinetics -- Chance can psionically manipulate flames by shaping it to his desire. This includes increasing and decreasing its size, intensity, and heat. He cannot generate flames. The ability to control flames is driven by his concentration and thus limited by the amount he's trying to control. So he likes to keep things small. Chance must also see the fire he is trying to control, although he's been known to speak of "feeling" the flame. He's immune to heat and bite of the fire he controls, but the fire that is wild can harm him like any other.
* Telepathy -- Limited to between only he and his brother. It's a twin thing. They can speak to one another in this manner and often share dreams or can tell how the other is feeling without such being voiced. At times they even get flashes of thoughts and memories from the mind of the other. The maximum their talking telepathy can reach is one mile and the farther it reaches, it takes actual true concentration.
*Note* As stated, Chance can not generate the fire he controls. But, he has been showing some rare small signs of being able to excite the atoms in the air, giving off a feel of heat. He may yet one day be able to generate fire, or this may just be a side effect of his hot temper. Such is unknown and without proper teaching, may remain forever so.
Skills & Hobbies:
* Blacksmithing -- Chance is under apprenticeship to Orion, whom has taken the boy on for his unique ability to manipulate fire. Such a skill comes in handy for heating the metals to the proper temperatures and keeping the heat equal about the metal. Most common metal fixtures such as gates, light fixtures, furniture, tools, railings, and other decorative objects are created. But what Chance has a true passion for is weaponry, such as swords and boomerangs and armory such as shields and plating. Not one to do well in academic classes, blacksmithing seems to be a constructive way to use his powers and something he can even make a living off of.
* Jack of Trades -- Not only can he craft weaponry, but Orion has taught Chance how to handle each piece properly to a degree. Chance is no master, but he knows the proper way to handle and sheath a sword, as well as the different motions of use and why a blade must be balanced and crafted as is to achieve the wanted use ability. This goes for many other things, from shields to boomerangs to plated armor and tools. In order to make something, one must first understand what it is they are making.
* Dance -- An art not many know of in Chance is he enjoys dancing. Not just the modern raves and that, but old-world dances, such as the waltz and slow dancing. He's also got a unique knack for ballet, but hardly anyone catches him in his tights.
* Exercise -- To help himself vent and to just spend time with his brother, Chance exercises. From frequenting the gym to just jogging, he's obsessed with keeping his form fit. He's always seeking to better himself physically and it helps him to also keep his mind clear for his Pyrokinetic abilities.
Background/History:
Laura and Jonathan Velian thought they were truly blessed on the night of their sons' arrival. They had been unable to conceive for nearly three years but finally they did so, and to make matters even more surprising. Twins! Identical twins at that. Although it went along with the traditional superstition of good and evil. One seemed bad, and the other seemed heavensent. Chance took to the more resentful side of things. Born two minutes after his brother, he was a handful from the start. But he never cried. Growing up, he constantly took chances that should not have been taken. He put himself and Lucas in a lot of danger and half of the time it was his brother who took the blame willingly to spare Chance further punishment. The brothers were inseparable and the only time Chance seemed to behave was with his brother. At the age of five tragedy struck. The family was enjoying a picnic at the local park, when out of nowhere a mutant-hate group drove by in pursuit of a green-scaled man fleeing for his life. He was shot repeatedly but healed miraculously fast. Sadly, Laura and Jonathan did not. They didn't survive the night. The Velian brothers were put into "the system" and there, separated.. Lucas was adopted, where Chance was left behind due to his temperament. Things didn't get any better for Chance. He failed miserably at classes and became known as a bully, pushing and forcing his will on others to get things his way. Only in his dreams did he visit his brother.. And those dreams kept him going. Life became too hard to deal with the other kids in the orphanage and all of the transfers. In NYC Chance made his escape at the age of seven. He had no place to go. He knew nobody. Hungry and desperate for something to eat, Chance took a chance that would change his life. Chance hung around at the bakery, and when the baker turned his back on some brought out to stock pastries, the kid nabbed and ran. The baker shouted and Chance kept going, but by the back of his shirt he was snagged up by a rather large brute of a man. Orion was his name, and he managed to talk the baker into not filing charges against the kid and even paid for what was taken, while holding Chance. It was a good grip too. The kid had no way to squirm out of the grip. From the looks of him it was easy to see he was homeless and a streetrat. Orion took the kid to his shop, a blacksmith's forge of all places with a little setup in the front selling everything from tools to weaponry. After finally getting the kid to talk, Orion demanded he be paid back for the pastries. Payment was to be Chance working for him, by taking care of the mules at this old-fashioned shop, doing deliveries, sweeping, and all that sort of stuff. He also demanded the kid stay with him to be sure to keep an eye on him. Chance didn't realize it at the time, but the kid had the best side of the deal. Work, care, and a place to stay. Chance and Orion would never admit it, but they grew close. Chance didn't go to school. He never made it past the first grade, but Orion taught him to read, write, and all sorts of things in passing. Even though small, due to running deliveries and all, Chance picked up on the blacksmith's terms and metallurgy. At the age of 13, Chance found he was feeling.. Different.. Inside something didn't seem right. He felt too, that something was wrong with his brother. He didn't know what or where he was, only that there was just.. something.. wrong... That night Chance came down with a terrible fever, and the kid was burning up. Orion did his best to care for him in this time of illness. Taking him to the hospital was a bit out of the question.. Chance had no birth certificate. No I.D. and Orion could face a lot of charges. Little did Chance know, Lucas was having his own issues at the exact same time... The fever was gone by morning, thankfully. And Orion knew nothing of medical care, else he would have realized that with a 110 degree fever, Chance should have been dead... Work resumed as normal, but Orion refused to have Chance push himself. So for the deliveries, he went out and Chance kept shop. While sweeping, that weird feeling kept taking over him. Chance could have sworn he was hearing things. His name, being called like a whisper to the mind. And the voice was so familiar, and not quite his own.. Louder and louder they grew until he could stand it no longer and just screamed out for such to stop.. The fires of the forge blazed, embers rushing forth and taking to the air as if lead by a phoenix. They washed over Chance and he screamed, only to realize, he felt no pain. Eyes wide, a hand tentatively reached towards the blaze that whirled about him like lace caught in the wind... No burn. No bite. And as if the oxygen was drained from the air, the flames soon dissipated back to their original sources of the forge. Surprisingly the place was untouched, not a singe anywhere from the interaction with the deadly element.. What happened? Did he imagine it? Chance found himself drawn towards the flames, hand outstretched.. And as if call meeting call, they rose towards his hand without a bite. For quite a bit Chance neglected his duty and played with the fire. When Orion returned, Chance took the chance to show him what he discovered. Granted it was very weak control and movement, it was still something. Orion found a mutant. He knew not of Xavier and his school, for if he did, one could bet Chance would have been sent off to there. Instead, Orion decided to put this talent to work. Thus Chance took on being apprenticed and gained the nickname of Hephaestus, to learn the trade of the blacksmith as well as to control his powers, and ultimately work the two together. He picked up many things, as well as learning to use what he made and thus understanding why things had to be made as they were. Orion had a thing against mutants, until Chance changed that. The two became closer then ever now having something more besides being gruff in common. A few weeks later, there was a knock at the shop door in the middle of the night. Chance awoke since Orion slept like a rock, and went to investigate. He was surprised to see himself standing there, but it wasn't him.. His brother came back to him! And since then the two have been inseparable again. While Lucas is a student at Xavier's, Chance tends to keep his distance from there. But as his brother tries to warm him up to the idea of it all, perhaps one day he may look into the place? Then again, he's never gotten an invitation, unlike his brother.
Appearance: Chance is -ripped- and he's a tall guy. His eyes always seem to have a bit of darkness to them, like a diamond with a rough edge that just can't be sanded smooth. He can come off as intimidating at first, holding his entire composure in pure confidence and not giving a care to the opinions of others. His eyes change but are most often seen as hazel or orange, sometimes even brown. It goes with his mood. Due to his profession, Chance is often seen with smudge marks of soot and dirt on his face and his hands usually also carry this blackness. He doesn't get into designer clothes too much, but he does like to show off his body. One thing he always has on him is at least two lighters, of course. Most noted is his hair, spiky and golden blond, but having natural crimson streaks at the tips.
Personality: Hot-headed and stubborn, Chance most definitely lives up to his name. He's a risk taker, seizing the chance and making things happen. It's all about the action baby! He's in it for actions, not words. Don't waste his time.. Chance often thinks before he acts and it's up to his brother to cool him down. If sides were in dire need to be taken, Chance would have to side with the Brotherhood on their thoughts.. But so far his brother has held him back from such. Outside of his tough and ill-tempered form, Chance can be a decent guy. If one manages to get close to him, it's his loyalty that will have him come through in the end. But being so impatient, the end may get there sooner then expected for some.
