Welcome to the Human Evolution Research Institute! Smack dab in the middle of the center of New York City, built in the most-populated area of the city as most as zoning restrictions would allow, it was an anomaly of sorts. While a research facility in name, in the past eight months of its opening it's become both quite the talk of the town, and even gaining some world-reknown!
This multi-story complex's exterior both professional but warm, an entrance on three sides await those interested in looking closer, all having signs welcoming any and all mutants to come inside if they were willing to be apart of their attempts expanses of scientific knowledge!
The fourth side has a different entrance, reading "INFIRMARY" above it , even having their own ward for those needing medical attention if critically needed.
During the day, at each of those entrances was a door guard assigned to greet and attend to those uninformed of what the place was for:
"Here at the Human Evolution Research Institute, we're looking to finally understand what makes those deemed 'Mutants' so different to not only the regular popoulace, but even to other so-called 'Mutants' in terms of how they look and what they can do! And frankly, we could use your help. By simply going in, giving a name -- No, don't worry sir/madam, a nickname is fine, confidentiality is part of our goal! -- a blood sample, and a description of what you're capable of puts us one step closer to solving this mystery! We ask if you're willing to, to even demonstrate your powers in one of our safe rooms! And before you ask, yes all blood samples -are- destroyed after all studies."
--Structure Design--
The three main entrances lead filter into their own large registration area, housed by friendly faces and staff ready to help them fill out what little paperwork was necessary at one of the many tables at their leisure before leading them to another room farther inside where the other entrance-rooms connected, filled with medical tables to take the volunteer's blood. The other door in each registration room headed to the infirmary ward, just in case it was needed. After the blood sample, the offer to fully demonstrate one's power is given, and if accepted, they're taken farther inside, to one of the upper floors of the facility, in one of the many reinforced chambers, with an observation room for the scientists, as well as cameras to document it, reviewed and edited at the volunteer's request in the purpose of confidentiality.
One face not uncommon around all of these rooms was that of a fairly young scientist not looking a day over twenty six, sporting the stereotypical garb, lab coat and even glasses, charming smile and cordial, excited voice accentuating the man's youthful flare and dedication to their cause. Ever-surprising those he meets with the fact, he is none other than the Head everything of the whole facility, Head Scientist, Director, the whole nine yards, Doctor Aiden Hidarion.
Even when not seen about, he always seems to make his way appear when one with particularly unique or astounding gifts describe their power, whether on the way to demonstration, or to convince the volunteer to give a demonstration if they refused..
There's even rumours of a hidden elevator or path somewhere deep within the facility of a way to access special subfloors beyond the ones in the design blueprints where even more bizarre research goes on, but that's what happens when you give conspiracy theorists a voice, pen, or blog, right?
There was even an unnatural level of security for confidentiality for those who come here, such as notable names and celebrities, politicians and the like who are or have family who are mutants, any photography taken in the vicinity seems to take blank pictures, and camcorders don't seem to work well either...Leaving no true evidence for paparazzi and journalists alike to uncover those in hiding.
--Political and Public Views--
While highly controversial when the the institute was first established, general adversity has been in slight decline over the eight months of its existence. With Dr. Hidarion's initial announcement that it was composed entirely on the premise of delving into the so-called "X-gene" that lies at the core of every mutant's powers.
Mapping out the differences to figure out what made mutants different from regular people exactly, and why even between mutants the powers were so different sounds like a valid scientific goal to uncover, an outcry of the possibility of the government using the samples to start cataologuing individual mutants, tagging them for later tracking or even worse, an eventual 'cure' for what many viewed as a disease amongst the populace resounded nearly instantly.
However, over time, especially with the trustworthy-face and innocence of Dr. Hidarion himself at each and every public announcement, feelings have waned and the radical ideas of such devious ulterior motives have been less popular in recent weeks.
The facility has even become a sort of sanctuary in the middle of the city for those mutants who need a safe place for a bit in the area, between the infirmary ward and the high grade of on-call security, it makes quite the shelter for those avoiding being caught by others, except the police of course, driving its acceptance in the mutant 'community' that much higher.
