1. Rules are for reading. If you haven't read the rules yet, they can be found at xxfactorxx.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=rules2&thread=6 While this step is simple enough, its always good to double-check just in-case they were updated recently, or your kick ass idea (which is totally sweet and kick ass) might not be approvable due to restraints or other types of rules. (The idea still remains so friggin' kick ass, however.)
2. Fill out your application form. The form is there really to be copy & pasted and then blanked out for your application. It helps the OPs and other players get the general gist of who/what/when well you get the idea. It also has the effect of giving your application some semblance of structure, so that you can get all those ideas (some which might be kick ass!) down onto the application in correct order.
3. Spell-checking isn't for nerds only. We aren't all T.S. Elliots in short pants, and we all make typos at times. Or misspell/missuse a word because its one of them silly homonyms or is just plain hard to spell. However, if the submitted application requires a DaVinci Code-like decoder wheel to read within the limits of understanding, its not going to get approved. Think of your application as a preview to the world of your Roleplay. This application and how it is written is a taste to all who read it of how you conduct yourself in the RP channel and with others. If they can't read your application, then how will they ever read your RP? Thankfully, proboards comes with its own spell checker, and for the truly daunting, you can always write it up in say MS Word or another program with spell check available, then just pork it into the text box when application time comes around.
4. Breaking the illusion is bad m'kay. Following suit of #3, sometimes we all come across a word that while we can attempt to spell correctly, we have no clue as to what it means. Or, we think we know, but we're not so sure. An example: defenestrate. Defenestrate is a word that means to throw out a window. Such as in the following sentence. "I'm about to defenestrate my computer!" That sentence means the same as "I'm about to throw my computer out the window!" but with a single bigger word to compensate. Which is fine and dandy when you know the definition of the word. But if you don't, or are unsure, give up. Its easier for the OPs to approve an application and for the other players to read the application if you chose to write "He/she can control other peoples' minds via mental control." rather than possibly hamfist it up with "He/she can control other peoples minds via hypnokinetic telempathy." While the latter sounds cooler, it also makes no sense.
5. Powers bring responsibility. This is a Roleplaying channel based off of the popular X-Men comic series. That said, the setting is an underground mutant facility for the most part, and other settings include New York City, and some plot-related locales. That said, the roleplay centers mostly on the interaction between characters, and at times against one another. While having a brooding darkly cynical powerhouse character who can shoot lasers from his eyes, is nigh invulnerable and who has a tragic past isn't against any set of rules, it is however a nice way to paint one's self into a corner RP-wise. Most of the students have willingly attended the facility pertaining that they were gifted children (Or at least, that's how its supposed to work), and not wards of the state, prison programs, or runaways. Again while these aren't against the rules, most characters would have a hard time relating to the überbrood, and would avoid him/her. Making for really downer self-RP. Consider this situation before submitting the character!
6. An Empty vessel's no good. We've all frequented other RPs here, and its normal at times to want to bring a favorite character over, despite time line or just plain genre differences. Usually its because it saves us the trouble from registering another new nickname. However, please make sure your character has purpose! Make sure that the application submitted wasn't just some (really kick ass!) idea you found when googling a picture of some guy with totally red hair that's wavy or this one guy posing like he's the lord'n'master of AWESOME. Building a character around a picture rarely nets good results unless you add substance and purpose. Who is this person, and why do they act the way they do? Unless its a physical mutation of sorts, people aren't just firing off arcs of white-hot electricity or mind-controlling throngs of students or even creating animated replicas of themselves all willy-nilly. Again the majority of play is the interactions between the characters. This means you don't have to submit a character that can bitchslap Apocalypse or Magneto or even Juggernaut with one hand, because you can relax in knowing that if Magneto or Apocalypse or even Juggernaut were to show up suddenly, your character would have other students and staff to fall back onto for support and aid in stopping these dire fiends.
7. Have FUN. That's a rule. Applications aren't meant to be this draconic and rigorous hellish moment of waiting and anticipating doom and destruction at every waking moment while its in submission. Come into the OOC room and chat it up. we're (usually) friendly, and like people who can take a joke or two. We've got some (usually) really funny people there who're great to talk with. It also lets the OPs have easy access to you if they want you to change something in your application; it does happen, and by all accounts, they'll give you a good reason why. The OPs have the grueling task of looking at the channel as a whole, and to see where it is, and where its heading. While your character might be fine right now, it might not be later on. Or your application might just be totally bonkers. Who knows? The OPs do. And they'll gladly help you out to have a working character, but since they do this for free, and aren't always available, things can take some time to have their magic worked. So be patient, be optimistic, and be ready to work out a compromise if such happens.
These are the wise words of Kelli/Vixen and Jim, but originally Rumble, creators and players of #Xaviers_School, the room that inspired this one when it dropped about two years ago. These rules worked back then and I have confidence in them now. They may be modified as need be.
